RSD – Roped Setter – Training

This 2-day course will focus on route setting best practice, equipment, rigging, ascent and descent, bag hauling, WAH, LOLER and PUWER regulations. A variety of companion rescue scenarios will be trained and practised over the two days, as will practical route-setting. The course is intended for climbers who have a have a good level of rope-work skills, can lead / belay and climb frequently indoors at 6b. The course is also appropriate for designated route setter rescuers and floor walkers with a route-setter rescue remit. This course is approved for 1 MTA or 2 AMI CPD points.

Following completion of the two-day training course, candidates may apply for the one-day assessment course.

It will be taught by Ben Humphris, professional Route Setter, RSD Trainer, IRATA Level 3 qualified technician and Mountaineering Instructor.

RSD – Commercial Roped Setter – Training and Assessment

Course open to head setters at ABC Member Walls

This training and assessment is only suitable for the most experienced setters looking to gain the RSD Roped setter training. This course will focus on route setting best practice, equipment, rigging, ascent and descent, bag hauling, WAH, LOLER and PUWER regulations. A variety of companion rescue scenarios will be trained and practised over the course, as will practical route-setting. The course is intended for climbers who have a have a good level of rope-work skills, can lead / belay and climb frequently indoors at 6b.

This course includes the use of all necessary equipment for setting and working at height.

Upon successfully completing the assessment the candidate will be issued with the RSD Commercial Roped Setter certificate which is valid for three years.

Eligibility criteria:

  • A minimum of six months regular boulder setting experience.
  • Ability to safely and effectively cordon off an area.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Working at Height (WAH) regulations and best practices.
  • Competency in manual handling techniques.
  • Proficient use of impact driver and applying holds to the wall.

RSD – Setting in Practice

This is a one-day in-person training and assessment day for novice setters and strippers in bouldering, roped or mixed wall environments.

To take part in an RSD Commercial Roped Setter training course you need to have:

Completed RSD Setting Basics or obtained exemption for experienced setters

Upon successfully completing the assessment the candidate will be issued with the RSD Setting in Practice certificate. This certificate is valid for three years.

RSD – Commercial Boulder Setter – Training

This is a one-day in-person training for commercial boulder setters. This course will give setters an better understanding of commercial requirements for a boulder setter, including work volume, team dynamics and quality especially within the grade range F3 – F6B.

Completed RSD Route Setting Basics and RSD Setting in Practice or obtained exemption for experienced setters

After completing this course candidates now need to complete a separate one day assessment. Upon successfully completing the assessment the candidate will be issued with the RSD Commercial Boulder Setter certificate. This certificate is valid for three years.
