RSD – Roped Setter – Training

Route Setting Development (RSD) is the route setting division of the Association of British Climbing Walls, which aims to provide aspiring & established route setters with recognized qualifications & workshops to improve setting safety, productivity & creativity.

This 2-day course is for designated route setters and experienced climbers who want to develop and refine best practice while route setting on roped walls and bouldering walls.  This qualification allows holders to route set bottom rope, auto-belay and lead climbing routes.

To take part in an RSD Roped Setter Level 1 course you need to have:

  • Route setting experience (desirable)
  • The ability to climb F6b
  • The ability to competently lead climb and safely belay a lead climber

This course covers attachment of holds and the creative process of route design with a particular focus on route setting rescues, rope-work and applicable regulations to ensure you can use safe working practices.

This course includes the use of all necessary equipment for setting and working at height.

After completing this course candidates now need to complete a separate one day assessment. Upon successfully completing the assessment the candidate will be issued with the RSD Roped Setter certificate. This certificate is valid for three years.

This two day course will focus on route setting best practice, equipment, rigging, ascent and descent, bag hauling, WAH, LOLER and PUWER regulations.

 

A variety of companion rescue scenarios will be trained and practised over the two days, as will practical route setting. The course is intended for climbers who have a good level of ropework skills, can lead and lead belay and who are able to climb 6b indoors.

 

The course is also appropriate for designated route setter rescuers and floor walkers with a route setter rescue remit. This course is approved for one MTA or two AMI CPD points.

 

Following completion of the two-day training course, candidates may apply for the one day assessment course.

 

This course will be run by Pete Hill WMCI, FRGS, IRATA Level 3 qualified technician, ABC Associate member and RSD trainer and assessor.

 

All equipment is provided.

 

The course fee is £250 per person including all specialised equipment and the course reference manual.
