Become a Member

To become a member of the Association of British Climbing Walls you must apply for the correct level of membership. We offer three main types of membership, each detailed below.

  1. Associate – for organisations with direct links to the climbing wall industry.
  2. Advised – typically for non-commercial organisations who operate small climbing and bouldering walls.
  3. Approved – for commercial climbing and bouldering walls.

Associate Member:

£250 p.a.

Associate Membership (formerly known as Trade Membership) is for organisations that do not operate a climbing wall but have direct links with the climbing wall industry. This level of membership commits your organisation to promoting the ABC Guidelines and ABC membership in the climbing wall industry.

Associate membership will give you:

  • A controlled copy of “Guidelines for the Management and Use of Artificial Climbing Wall Structures”
  • Notice and minutes of all general meetings of the association.
  • Invites to all general meetings. (You will not have the right to vote or to be nominated as an officer of the Association).
  • The opportunity to use the ABC logo (clearly identifying Associate membership) on your company’s documentation.
  • Access to trade discounts arranged for members.
  • Access to the member’s section of the website.

Associate Membership Application Form

Advised membership is for climbing walls that currently feel unable to meet the full requirement of ABC Membership but are able to make a commitment to operating a safe facility and complying with the Association’s Code of Practice. This states the minimum level of safety that the Association believes is necessary to ensure a positive climbing experience for climbing wall users and staff.

Advised membership will give you:

  • Discounted access to the Association’s training seminars and workshops.
  • Notice and minutes of all general meetings of the Association.
  • The right to attend all general meetings. (You will not have the right to vote or to be nominated as an officer of the Association).
  • Assistance in the process to become Approved members of the Association.
  • The right to display the ABC Code of Practice document.
  • NB you are not entitled to use the ABC logo as an Advised member.
  • Benefit from any trade discounts arranged for members.
  • Access to the forum section of the website where you can interact, gain and share knowledge with other wall operators.

Advised Membership Application Form

Approved Member:

£250 p.a

Approved membership will give you:

  • Up-to-date copies of the ABC Guidelines, Aide Memoire and access to the Members area of the website.
  • Access to the officers and members of the Association to help with new industry-specific challenges you may face
  • A vote on the future of the organisation at the AGM.
  • Discounted access to ABC conferences and seminars keeping you up-to-date on issues affecting climbing walls.
  • The opportunity to display an ABC membership certificate at your facility and to use the ABC logo on your company’s documentation.
  • Details of your wall on the ‘Our Member’s’ page of the ABC website
  • Inclusion in any joint advertising organised by the ABC
  • Access to trade discounts arranged for our Members

To apply for Approved membership status you must;

  • Become an Aspirant Member of the Associaton
  • Complete and submit your self-audit to our Membership Committee within 12 months of becoming an Aspirant Member.
  • Complete the application form.
  • Get an ABC full member to sponsor your application.
  • Your form will be reviewed by the membership committee, you will be contacted if more information is needed. The committee will inform the ABC membership of your application and ask for comments.
  • Provided your wall meets the required standard, your application will then be recommended to the ABC Management Committee for approval.
  • If you operate more than one climbing wall you must complete this process for each location.

To become an Approved Member you must first become an Aspirant Member. Please see the section below for details.

Aspirant Member:

£250 p.a.

Aspirant membership is for organisations who wish to achieve Approved Membership status. Aspirant membership runs for up to 12 months from the acceptance of your application. In that time you will use the ABC Guidelines and Approved membership application form to complete a self-audit of your operating procedures to ensure you are operating in line with the ABC guidelines.

Aspirant membership will give you:

  • Full access to the Member’s section on the website and the expertise and guidelines contained within it.
  • Discounted access to ABC workshops and seminars. Attending these is the fastest and simplest way to make sure that your wall is following the industry’s best working practices.
  • A vote on the future of the organisation at the AGM.
  • NB you are not entitled to use the ABC logo as an Aspirant member.
