Boulder 1
Course details
- ½ day online or full day in-person
- Essential health & safety and relevant legislation
Entry criteria
- Age 16+
Revalidation
- Required every 3 years unless higher qualification gained

- Setting in Practice
Boulder 2
Course details
- 1 day combined training and assessment
- Relevant equipment, some setting and stripping, what makes a good boulder and what makes a safe boulder.
- Allows independent setting in any boulder centre
Entry criteria
- Setting Basics (or exemption*)
- 6 months’ regular climbing experience
Revalidation
- Required every 3 years unless higher qualification gained
Progression
- Log 20 quality boulder setting days before progressing to Commercial Boulder Setter training, and/or
- Progress straight to Commercial Roped Setter training
Boulder 3
Course details
- 1 day training
- Commercial requirements for a boulder setter, including work volume, team dynamics and quality especially within the grade range F3 – F6B
Entry criteria
- Setting Basics (or exemption*)
- Setting in Practice (or exemption*)
- Minimum of 20 logged quality boulder setting days
Revalidation
- Not required if Commercial Boulder Setter Assessment is passed
Progression
- Log an additional 10 quality boulder setting days before progressing to Commercial Boulder Setter Assessment
Course details
- 1 day assessment
- Commercial requirements for a boulder setter, including work volume, team dynamics and quality especially within the grade range F3 – F6B

- Setting in Practice (or exemption*)
- Commercial Boulder Setter Training (or exemption*)
- Minimum of 10 logged quality boulder setting days following Commerical Boulder Setter training (or exemption*)

- Reassess every 3 years

- Optional progression to Commercial Roped Setter
- RSD Skills masterclasses and workshops
- RSD Continuing Professional Development webinars
- (in development) Competition Setter
Roped 1
Course details
- 2 days training
- Relevant equipment, rescues, hauling, setting, what makes a good route and what makes a safe route
- Supervised roped setting at different centres and angles, based on supervisor discretion
Entry criteria
- Setting Basics (or exemption*)
- Setting in Practice (or exemption*)
Revalidation
- Not required if Commercial Roped Setter Assessment is passed
Progression
- Log a minimum of 15 routes set and stripped before progressing to Commercial Roped Setter Assessment
Course details
- 1 day assessment
- Unsupervised roped setting across various centres and wall angles
Entry criteria
- Setting Basics (or exemption*)
- Setting in Practice (or exemption*)
- Commercial Roped Setter Training (or exemption*)
- Minimum of 15 logged routes set and stripped
Revalidation
- Reassess every 3 years

- Optional progression to Commercial Boulder Setter
- RSD Skills masterclasses and workshops
- RSD Continuing Professional Development webinars
- (in development) Competition Setter
Fast track exemptions
It is possible for experienced setters to enter the pathway directly at Boulder 2, Boulder 3, or Roped 1, providing they can demonstrate the required experience, knowledge and skills.

Candidates seeking exemption from Setting Basics must demonstrate that they meet the following entry requirements:
- Good knowledge of WAH and Manual Handling
- A good understanding of removing, attaching and pinning holds
- A good understanding about how to safely and effectively cordon off an area

- Competency in manual handling techniques.
- Proficient use of impact driver and applying holds to the wall.
If a direct entry candidate does not pass the assessment, they must complete the Commercial Roped Training before being eligible to retake the assessment.
