For the past 3 years the Association of British Climbing Walls has been running its AGM and annual conference (sponsored this year by Walltopia) over two days at Plas y Brenin. The event has gone from strength to strength with sessions run by industry experts and attended by representatives from all types of climbing walls.
For the first time this year the ABC is welcoming non-members as well as members to the conference and its AGM, as it wants to open the doors to as many people from the climbing world as possible. There is a wide range of exciting speakers, for example:
Guy Jarvis (Executive Officer of MTE) will be talking about Mountain Training’s Current Climbing Awards review. The final proposals are being thrashed out right now and will go to boards in October for approval. If these are approved the UK will have a whole new suite of climbing awards for instructors, coaches and participants for the 21st Century. This is Mountain Training’s biggest project to date and will have huge impact on the sector for decades to come. This is your chance to come and find out what is proposed and to ask questions and make comment before it becomes set in stone. Don’t say you weren’t asked…
Lindsey Gaimster of Bhayani HR & Employment Law will be highlighting essential areas that climbing walls cannot afford to cover around employment, contracts and recruiting the right people. Activities Insurance Mutual are delivering an in-depth look behind the scenes into the minds of insurance companies, and there will be a cutting-edge discussion on the Fixe anchor failures and how the issue is being addressed.
Thursday evening sees two great after dinner speaker sessions. The first is from Peter Pircher and Maria Hilber of Vertical Life, one of the most successful IT start-ups in the climbing segment, who will talk about ‘Applying Technology to Climbing’. Since its foundation in 2012, the start-up Vertical-Life GmbH has become an important player in the segment of digital climbing guides and in the combined publication of content in books, apps and the interweb.
The ABC is also delighted to welcome Boulder-Kletterhallen Service whose session is titled ‘The Past, Present and Future of the Commercial Setting’. Boulder-Kletterhallen Service provides all aspects of climbing and bouldering facilities, including planning and purchase, and route and boulder construction.
With many other sessions suitable for wall owners, managers and staff such as an insight into the current state of the indoor climbing industry, applying the new EN standards, the forthcoming Olympics, and running BMC competitions, this is an exciting opportunity to network with those at the forefront of the growing climbing industry, including Mountain Training and the ABCTT.
