I am writing to you on my first day as your first Chief Executive to say hello and introduce myself.
It is an incredible time to be joining the ABC. With the 2020 Tokyo Olympics on the horizon, and rapid growth in the industry, the opportunity for us to help take UK climbing to the next level is within our gift. In my view, there is strong alignment between what climbers are looking for, the needs of ABC members, and the many other bodies interested in the sport. I.e. greater (and broader) participation, higher and safer standards of operation, and a strong voice that speaks for the industry.
I am passionate about climbing and have done so since I was 17. It is the reason that I took on this role; an opportunity to help build on the fantastic work that the ABC has achieved to date and now turn up the volume. I live in Exeter and work part time as a Senior Partner in a large management consultancy. My particular fields are people and organisational issues in Government and, as a consequence, I spend much of my time in Whitehall helping leaders build capability. That’s a long way from bouldering on the moor, or an evening session at Ansteys Cove, but I want to bring my experience of running businesses to something I love.
I will be working for the ABC one day a week (usually on Mondays) and over the next few weeks I will be in touch again to share with you early thoughts on direction of travel and work of the association for the coming period.
In closing, I really do believe it is our industry’s time and I look forward to working with you, and for you, to make the most of it. If you have ideas about the future of the association, the industry or the climbing world – let’s chat. The coffee is on me…
All the best
